The Society and Environment Department In the Society and Environment learning area, your child will develop an understanding of how individuals and groups live together and interact with their environment. Students are also encouraged to develop a respect for cultural heritage and a commitment to social justice, the democratic process and ecological sustainability. The Year 8 group will all follow the same course outline with modifications to the learning program depending on the student’s ability and aptitude. Year 8 Society and Environment introduces students to using skills of social inquiry, to develop knowledge that is relevant to them. They will build their skills in investigation, communicating and participating in their learning. They will be further exposed to those valuable lessons that you impart to them at home, that is, their culture, values and citizenship responsibilities, reinforced by formal learning of how these values operate in our society. Students in Year 8, and consecutive years, are expected to complete home study on a regular basis. This may be in the form of completing work begun in class, research, extension activities, writing assignments, and reviewing work. Students in lower school keep portfolios of work that reflect their knowledge and skills in the seven Society and Environment learning area outcomes:
At Broome Senior High School the social studies outcomes are strongly linked to the discipline areas which make up Society and Environment:
Topics covered are linked to the achievement of outcomes through the study of these four disciplines and their core curriculum. These programs ensure that your child receives a balanced education by the provision of courses with appropriate breadth and depth of content within these discipline areas with activities focused on the ongoing development of the student understanding. The lower school Society and Environment subjects provide a solid foundation for upper school Course of Study subjects in this discipline area. These courses are focused on the individual disciplines above which make up the Society and Environment learning area.
